When it comes to senior rankings, Lancashire born Dan Smethhurst, 17, is out of sight at 1156 but if you ask any top junior, he’s right on the map after his sensational run to the final of the ITF Grade 1 junior event at Roehampton a week before Wimbledon. The 18 and under event, which was being played on the Bank of England Sports Ground grass courts, attracted a world class field of players from which Dan just missed out, losing 7-5, 6-2 to the unseeded French boy, Gillaume Rufin in the final. “It’s great to see Dan’s hard work pay off,” said Paul Annacone, Head Coach of Men’s Tennis at the LTA. “He’s worked really hard this year and improved tremendously.” That work began to bear fruit, according to Annacone just a few weeks earlier at the French Open junior event on clay, where Dan battled his way past Australian Matt Reid in three pulsating sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 before going down to second seeded Mexican, Cesar Ramirez, 7-5 in the third. “His first realisation that he can play at this level came at the Junior French Open and he has learnt a lot from that experience,” commented Annacone. “He now believes he can compete at this level week in week out.” Dan’s achievement in reaching the final was all the more notable as he had to battle through the qualifying event even to make it to the main draw. Dan will need more victories like that to improve upon his ITF junior ranking of 73, but this run of results over the summer will certainly boost his confidence.
