Andy Murray and Jamie Baker have both been beaten in the first round, ending British interest in the Australian Open.
Both were beaten in four sets. Murray lost 7-5, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Baker was beaten 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1-7), 6-4 by Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic.
The French Tsonga, 38 in the world rankings, won the first two sets before receiving treatment on his thigh in the third set, which he lost to love. He took the fourth in a tense tiebreak, but produced over 60 unforced errors in the match and a disappointing Murray was unable to capitalise.
Questions were being asked immediately about whether he has the ability to succeed at the top level, but Murray said: “Winning four tournaments in the last few years, I know I’ve got the potential to challenge for grand slams in the future, but I still have a bit of inexperience and that showed in the match today.”
He said: “I’m obviously disappointed that I didn’t win the match. I wanted to win more than anything. I gave it my best effort out there, but it’s not the worst I’ve felt after a defeat.”
