A number of British players have recently enrolled at American universities on tennis scholarships. Among these is 19-year-old Iain Atkinson, who has gone to Wake Forest University, North Carolina. Iain was part of the national training squad at Roehampton, played at Junior Wimbledon in 2006 and won the Stella Artois U18 event at Queens.
Another Tynesider going to the US, is 18 year old Chris Guard from South Shields, who is attending Mount Olive College, North Carolina and will be studying for a PE degree. He attended Gateshead College and played for Durham & Cleveland U18s.
18-year-old Londoner, Oscar Podliewski, enrolled at Elon University, North Carolina and will be studying for a business degree. Oscar reached the quarters at the U18 Nationals in 2006, played for Middlesex at U18 and senior levels and reached the Last 16 in two British Tour events.
For the autumn of 2008, Adam Hunt, of Surrey, has already signed with Mercer University, Georgia. Laurence Heads, of Stockton-on-Tees, has committed to Monmouth University, New Jersey. Jennifer Whateley, of Surrey, Elizabeth Verow , of Worcestershire, Nadine Steward, of Oxfordshire, Jenny Rabot, of Hertfordshire, and many others are currently considering offers.
