It has been some time since a British girl has made it to the third round of the US Open; seventeen years in fact. Today Anne Keothavong showed that there is more to British tennis than just the Murray brothers. With her win over Francesca Schiavone (25) by 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 she assures herself at least one more match. Now she will have to face the likes of the current gold medal winner, Elena Dementieva (5).
This will be a bit more of a test for the Brit. Dementieva is a tough and consistent player as well as very intelligent. Keothavong will have to play her very best tennis to have a chance of beating back to back seeded players.
Andy Roddick moved onto the second round tonight with a win over the less than magical Magician.
Fabrice Santoro, who is known for more spins than a yoyo, just did not have enough to get past the No. 8 seed. As well, Roddick played some of the smartest tennis I have seen him play in quite some time. Instead of being drawn into firing rockets at the Frenchman, he played a softer game with a bit more spin on the ball. This seemed to surprise Santoro and left him with few options to get past the 2003 champion. Straight sets: 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
Other notables to move on today are:
Lindsay Davenport while looking less than stellar sent Alisa Kleybanova on her way.
Jelena Jankovic, the No. 2 seed, had a really hard time against Sofia Arvidsson. It took Jankovic three sets to get past the Swede and did not look too good in the process. Jankovic, who is recovering from a torn meniscus, will need to get it together if she wants a chance to make her way back to No. 1 in the world.
Novak Djokovic hobbled into the second round as he had a little scare in his match from his ankle in the second set. But not to worry, he won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 over Arnaud Clement
American Robby Ginepri sailed through his first round match against Amer Delic, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6.
So there you have it, a relatively benign day for the seeds here in New York. As we head into the second and third rounds we should see a bit more pressure on the seeds. Look for first timer Ryler de Heart in tomorrow night’s final match. The one-time Tampa native takes on some guy named Rafael Nadal. I hope he has found someone to scout this guy out. Word on the street is that this Nadal guy has a future in this game.
