Grandstand, the third showcourt of the US Open, sits alongside Louis Armstrong. There is no reserved seating on this court, however, the most sought after seats this afternoon were those, in the West Stand, the only courts at Flushing Meadows with any shade . It reached 54% humidity, and 85 degrees in the sun and Andy Murray looked as if he was struggling to cope with the heat.
The crowd clearly longed for a 5 setter, yet the feeling well into the third set, was that Meltzer was heading for the fourth round and Andy Murray for home. With the score at 6-7, 4-6, and 5-5 in the 3rd Set tiebreak, Murray served up an Ace at 138 mph, followed in the next point by a superb back hand pass. His celebration was simply to stand tall and silently in front of his team sitting courtside.
The sun had now settled behind the clouds giving some respite, and as Murray set out to serve in the 4th set there appeared to be a change in momentum. Murray took the 1st game to love and broke Melzer’s serve in the 2nd. Andy now seemed to be on a roll, and the crowd was euphoric. With Meltzer’s serve broken a 2nd time in the 4th game, Murray now took he 5th game delivering two aces to win another game to love. Meltzer held on to his last service game before Murray took the set 6-1, levelling the match 2 sets all.
Meltzer received lengthy treatment to his quads from the trainer then came out fighting in the 5th set taking the 1st game to love. Despite some close battles, the next few games went with serve, until Murray broke in the 7th game to bring the score to 4 -3. Murray quickly sealed the next game with an Ace 5-3. After just over 3 hours and 40 minutes Meltzer was left serving to stay in the match, however, Murray earned two match points. Meltzer fought back to deuce but it is Murray who takes the match .
Murray rolls up his sleeve and displays his ever burgeoning biceps. This we later learn is a message to his fitness team ’ that he has put in the hard work off the court and it has all been worthwhile.’
